ABHS field trip to the Langston Hughes Project

Amy Biehl is traveling to Popejoy to watch the the Langston Hughes Project, a multimedia concert performance of Langston Hughes’ kaleidoscopic Jazz poem suite – 10:00 am curtain – Friday 3 February.  This critically acclaimed show features Dr. Ron McCurdy from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.  Tickets are free.

Parents and community members, feel free to use this link to reserve tickets.

The Langston Hughes Project is based around Hughes’ poem, ‘Ask Your Mama:  Twelve Moods for Jazz’.  The poem – set during the Harlem Renaissance - deals with the struggle for freedom and dignity for African American people.  The show connects the historical dots between the Civil Rights Movement, the colonization of African countries and today’s often troubling political landscape.  The Langston Hughes Project (LHP) has been performed in 40 states and Mexico City, on many college campuses (including our own), and in venues ranging from a 20-person capacity to Carnegie Hall.  In support of scholarships for African American Student Services, the Ron McCurdy Trio has volunteered to perform two additional fundraising concerts.  They will be joined by award-winning jazz vocalist Nicole Henry.
